this Week at the faRM

As you can see the very hungry caterpillar is munching on his milkweed. We haven’t seen any of his Monarch relatives flying by yet, but at least they know the way.

Everything is sprouting and growing! We’ve had a long, cool spring, so some things—like the carrots and onions—are taking their time to pop up. But the sugar snap peas, green beans, and even the Lima beans are already twining around their trellises. The corn is up and almost ready to be thinned, and in the greenhouse, we’re seeing lettuce, basil, marigolds, and nasturtiums. Of course the asparagus is consistently pushing up spears both outside and in the greenhouse—and I think the rhubarb has enough stalks for Bob’s favorite strawberry-rhubarb pie.

And oh, the berries. The blueberries are already weighing down the bushes and the blackberries—well, we’ll see. We thought this was going to be a “rebuilding” year, but there sure are a lot of blooms on those blackberry canes.

Elsewhere, we’re watching the calla lilies start their summer show even as we bid farewell to the peonies and wild iris. Our wildflower meadow could use a good rain, but bachelor buttons, butterfly weed, daisies, white yarrow, and clover are already blooming.

Why don’t you stop by for a visit? We’d love to see you!
